SID-ISRAEL PREPARES AID WORKERS FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Today (Wednesday), SID-Israel hosted a training course in humanitarian aid to prepare volunteers for emergency response in the Philippines and other locations. 25 participants from a range of backgrounds came together for the full-day crash course entitled "Principles for Responsible Deployment to an Emergency Zone" at SID-Israel's offices in Rehovot.

"Our aim is to build the professional capacity of Israeli aid workers to ensure the aid they give is of the highest possible caliber," said Dana Manor, Director of Training and Capacity Building at SID-Israel. "We are working is to support the tireless efforts of Israeli aid organizations in places such as the Philippines to enable them to do their jobs as well as possible."

SID-Israel is the Israeli branch of the Society for International Development, a global network of people and institutions engaged in promoting development since 1957. SID-Israel is a coalition of individuals, NGOs and state agencies working in the field of development and aid today.

The training course was led by Hamutal Afek-Eitam, an Israel-born expert in humanitarian aid who recently returned to Israel after years of working in training of aid workers in Europe for leading international NGOs. The course included practical training in international standards to enable Israel actors to align their efforts with those of humanitarian actors from across the globe.

In addition to promoting effective humanitarian response, the course helped participants identify important opportunities for networking and synergy. By virtue of the course, an Israeli participant  who will be serving in Israel's Embassy in Ghana met  Peter Pobee, a Ghanan citizen who participated in the course to learn information to help his own citizens. "We need to talk, " she told him.

Ariel Dloomy, SID-Israel's executive director described the training as 'an important piece of the puzzle'. "We are discovering an increasing number of Israeli organizations and activists working in this field. SID is working to enable Israeli agencies and aid workers to do professional coordinated aid and development work," said Dloomy. In addition to trainings, SID works to promote Israeli development work through education, awareness, and policy reform.
